STONE TOWN, ZANZIBAR, AFRICA

Zanzibar received its independence from Great Britain in 1964 and, worried over how they would address security in such a small island nation, proposed to neighboring Tanganyika on the mainland that the two nations merge.  The proposal was accepted and Tanganyika became Tanzania - 'Tan' for Tanganyika and 'Zan' for Zanzibar.  Although technically one country, Zanzibar has a culture and a landscape completely different from that found on the mainland, so I have separated the photos of Zanzibar from those of Tanzania.  Indeed, there is now a separatist movement afoot in Zanzibar, so there may come a time in the future when they are once again two counties.
